Quick answer

German cockroaches are eliminated with baits, not sprays. The approach that works:

  1. Confirm the species and find hiding spots with sticky traps.
  2. Remove food, water, and clutter — especially around the kitchen sink.
  3. Place small dots of cockroach gel bait in cracks near where they hide.
  4. Don’t spray repellents or set off bug bombs — they scatter roaches and ruin the bait.
  5. Seal gaps and fix leaks, then monitor for 2–4 weeks.

If you still see roaches after two weeks, see them in the daytime, or live in a multi-unit building, a professional treatment is usually faster and cheaper than months of DIY.

Is It a German Cockroach?

Three cockroach species turn up in Chicagoland homes, and they need different treatment. German cockroaches are the one that lives and breeds inside your home — and the hardest to get rid of.

Small, fast, tan roaches in the kitchen are almost always German cockroaches. Tiny wingless nymphs (dark with a light stripe down the back) mean they’re already breeding.

How Bad Is Your Infestation?

German cockroaches hide during the day and come out at night. By the time you notice them, the population behind your walls is usually much larger than what you see. Tick everything that applies:

30-second infestation check

Why German Cockroaches Are So Common in Chicagoland

  • Shared walls and plumbing. In apartment buildings, condos, and townhomes, roaches travel between units through pipe chases, wall voids, and electrical lines. Treating one unit while the neighbors have roaches is the #1 reason infestations come back.
  • Winter doesn’t slow them down. German cockroaches live entirely indoors. Heated buildings give them warmth, water, and food all year, so they keep breeding through January.
  • They hitchhike in. Most new infestations start with roaches or egg capsules carried in cardboard boxes, grocery bags, used appliances, second-hand furniture, or moving boxes.
  • They multiply fast. A female carries an egg capsule holding 30–48 eggs until they’re almost ready to hatch, and nymphs can become breeding adults in about 2–3 months.

Step-by-Step: How to Get Rid of German Cockroaches Yourself

For a small, recent problem in a single-family home, this plan can work. Follow the steps in order — skipping the cleanup step is the most common reason baits fail.

1

Find Where They Hide

Place sticky traps under the sink, behind the fridge and stove, and inside lower cabinets for 2–3 nights. The traps that catch the most roaches show you where to focus. Keep a few out afterward to track progress.

2

Take Away Food & Water

Wipe counters nightly, don’t leave dishes in the sink, store food and pet food in sealed containers, fix leaks under sinks, clean grease behind the stove and fridge, and get rid of cardboard boxes.

3

Use Gel Bait the Right Way

Use a cockroach gel bait (active ingredients such as indoxacarb, fipronil, or abamectin). Place pea-sized dots in cracks near hiding spots: cabinet hinges, under the sink, behind appliances. Roaches carry it back and spread it to the colony.

4

Dust Hidden Voids (Optional)

A barely visible layer of boric acid in wall voids, behind outlet covers, and under appliances can help. Roaches avoid heavy piles. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

5

Seal Entry Points

Caulk gaps around pipes under sinks, along baseboards and backsplashes, and around electrical boxes on shared walls.

6

Refresh & Monitor 2–4 Weeks

Replace bait when it’s eaten or dried out. If trap counts aren’t dropping after two weeks, switch to a bait with a different active ingredient — the population may be resistant.

Always read and follow the product label. Keep all baits, dusts, and traps out of reach of children and pets.

What Not to Do (These Make It Worse)

  • Bug bombs and foggers. North Carolina State University researchers found that total-release foggers had little to no effect on German cockroaches in real apartments — the spray settles on open surfaces, not in the cracks where roaches live. They also leave residue on kitchen surfaces and can be a fire hazard near pilot lights.
  • Spraying store-bought insecticide near your bait. Most sprays are repellent. They contaminate the bait so roaches won’t eat it, and they push roaches deeper into walls — or into the next room or apartment.
  • Using several products at once. Mixing sprays, baits, and dusts in the same spots usually means none of them work well.
  • Waiting it out. German cockroaches don’t leave on their own and don’t die off in winter. Every few weeks of waiting means a new generation.

Why DIY Cockroach Control Often Fails

  • Insecticide resistance. Many German cockroach populations are resistant to common insecticides. Purdue University researchers reported in 2019 that some populations developed resistance to multiple insecticide classes at once, making store-bought products much less reliable.
  • Eggs are protected. Most products don’t kill eggs inside the capsule, so new roaches keep hatching for weeks after you think you’ve won.
  • Bait aversion. Some populations have learned to avoid certain bait ingredients, such as glucose. If roaches walk past your bait, it’s time for a different formula.
  • The neighbors. In multi-unit buildings, roaches re-enter from adjacent units through shared walls and plumbing.

When to call a professional: you see roaches in the daytime, you’ve tried baits for 2+ weeks without a clear drop, you have roaches in multiple rooms, or you share walls with neighbors. A pro can identify the species, use products and rotation strategies not available in stores, and treat the hidden voids where the colony lives.

DIY vs. Professional: What It Costs in Chicagoland

Store-bought baits and traps are the cheapest place to start for a small, recent problem — but they come with no guarantee, and heavy infestations rarely clear up with DIY alone.

EcoWall cockroach treatment: 5-Treatment Cockroach Program — $200 for the first treatment, $150 for each of the next four (90-day no-roach guarantee) or a One-Time Treatment from $250/visit (30-day re-treatment guarantee). Exact price is confirmed on-site before work begins — see what’s included.

What to Expect From a Professional Treatment

  • Inspection: the technician confirms the species and finds harborage spots — pipe chases, appliance voids, cabinet hinges.
  • Targeted treatment: professional gel baits in cracks and crevices, plus growth regulators that stop young roaches from reproducing.
  • Results: most homes see a sharp drop in activity within 48–72 hours, with colony elimination in about 2–3 weeks.
  • Follow-up: German cockroaches rarely disappear after one visit, so our program includes 5 treatments to catch roaches that hatch after the first one.

How to prepare: empty the cabinet under the sink, pull the fridge and stove slightly away from the wall if you can, put food in sealed containers, and hold off on any sprays before the visit so the baits work.

Renting? Who’s Responsible for Cockroaches

In most Chicago-area rentals, pest control in multi-unit buildings falls to the landlord or building owner — especially when roaches are moving between units. If you rent in the City of Chicago, the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO) requires landlords to keep units in compliance with the building code, and you can report unresolved problems through 311. Suburbs such as Evanston and Oak Park have their own rental rules.

Check your lease, notify your landlord in writing, and ask that neighboring units be treated too. Treating only one unit in an infested building rarely lasts. This is general information, not legal advice.

How to Keep Cockroaches From Coming Back

  • Inspect grocery bags, boxes, and deliveries before bringing them in
  • Recycle cardboard quickly instead of storing it
  • Check used appliances and furniture before moving them in
  • Fix leaks and keep under-sink areas dry
  • Don’t leave dishes, pet food, or open food out overnight
  • Clean behind the stove and fridge every few months
  • Seal gaps around pipes and outlets on shared walls
  • Keep a few sticky traps out to catch early signs

German Cockroach FAQ

Does seeing one cockroach mean I have an infestation?

Not always, but with German cockroaches it usually does. They hide in cracks during the day and rarely travel alone, so one sighting typically means more are hiding nearby. Put sticky traps under the sink and behind the fridge for a few nights. If they catch more roaches, you have an established population.

Can German cockroaches fly?

German cockroaches have wings but almost never fly. They may glide short distances when disturbed, but they spread by running and by hitchhiking in boxes, bags, and appliances.

Are German cockroaches dangerous?

They don’t bite people in normal circumstances, but their droppings and shed skins contain allergens linked to asthma, especially in children. They also walk through drains and garbage and can contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria.

How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?

With a professional bait-based treatment, most homes see a sharp drop in activity within 48 to 72 hours and colony elimination in about 2 to 3 weeks. Heavy infestations and apartments with shared walls can take one or two follow-up visits. DIY efforts usually take longer because eggs inside protected egg cases keep hatching.

Will cockroaches go away on their own in winter?

No. German cockroaches live entirely indoors, so Chicago winters don’t affect them. Heated buildings give them warmth, water, and food all year.

Do bug bombs work on German cockroaches?

No. Research from North Carolina State University found that total-release foggers had little to no effect on German cockroach populations in real apartments, because the insecticide doesn’t reach the cracks where roaches hide. Foggers can also leave residue on surfaces and create a fire risk if used near pilot lights.

How much does cockroach extermination cost in Chicagoland?

At EcoWall Pest Control, a one-time cockroach treatment starts at $250 and our 5-treatment cockroach program costs $200 for the first treatment and $150 for each of the next four ($800 total). The exact price depends on home size and how severe the infestation is, and it’s confirmed after inspection before any work begins.
